When I first started making cabinets I desired plain, uninteresting wood. I considered unpredictable grain patterns, knots, and color variation “defects”. I now consider those same key unpredictable grain patterns, knots, and color variations of natural wood as desirable “character”. I now sift through lumber and plywood at the hardware store trying to define the “character” of my cabinet.
What I like about http://www.akorncabinets.com is that I can purchase my cabinet doors with the choice woods including knotty pine, paint grade maple, paint grade poplar, select alder, select ash, select cherry, select red oak, select white maple, select white oak, and walnut. I know other cabinet makers who are forced to mix wood species (e.g. alder doors are close enough to the cherry used for the cabinet) because of a lack of selection.
