When upgrading a kitchen, I would recommend installing crown molding on the upper cabinets. When making new cabinets, this can be accomplished by over-sizing the upper portion of the face frame to accept the crown molding. Remember to use shorter pins when pinning the crown molding into the cabinet, and longer pins when pinning into the ceiling. Pre-fabricated or old cabinets can be lowered by shimming the cabinets off of the ceiling with the use of lumber such as 2×4s. The gap created from the lumber is hidden by the crown molding.

This technique seems great, but one should consider the reduction in counter height. That crock pot might not fit on the counter after lowering the upper cabinets!
